You can bring some photos for your doctor to give him or her an idea of what you would like and what you do not like. If your doctor knows exactly what you want, they can help you determine if your goals are realistic. You will also be asked about any medications you are currently taking, past or present medical conditions, previous surgeries and lifestyle habits such as smoking. You should be prepared to share with your doctor any information that could have an impact on your surgery. Certain health conditions and lifestyle factors can increase your risks during and after surgery.
Your doctor will give you pre-op instructions. You should follow your doctor’s instructions in order to avoid complications during and after surgery. You may be required to stop taking certain medications. If you are a smoker, your doctor will ask you to stop smoking a couple weeks before your surgery. You will need to arrange for someone to take you to and from your appointment. Also, your doctor will encourage you to fill your prescriptions before surgery so you will have your medications immediately following surgery.
A variety of fillers can be used in lip augmentation surgery. The most common ones are fat, collagen and restylane. Fat is taken from the patient’s body and does not pose the risk of an allergic reaction. Collagen is a protein found naturally in our bodies. It provides support to various areas of the body, including the lips. Collagen can be produced in various thicknesses depending on the needs of the patient. A skin test is required before using collagen for lip augmentation. Restylane is an injectable gel which contains hyaluronic acid which is found in the body naturally and gives volume and hydration to the skin.
Lip augmentation surgery lasts about 30 minutes when using injectable fillers. The pain involved is minimal and local anesthesia is usually all that is required. Your doctor will determine before surgery where to inject the filler. Results will be visible immediately following surgery. The results are not permanent and will vary depending on the patient and the type of filler used. However, regardless of the injectable used, the body will eventually absorb the material and results will no longer be visible.
As with any procedure, there is a risk of infection and having a reaction to anesthesia. Other risks could be involved and will depend on the type of filler used.
