Liposuction and Office Based Surgical Facilities
Liposuction is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery. Liposuction is also one of the most common procedures to be performed in an office based surgical facility. This is because the liposuction procedure usually serves small localized areas of fat and is very centralized to a specific area. In addition, liposuction may be performed under mild to moderate sedation and local anesthesia. So, it may be considered one of the least invasive plastic surgery procedures when compared to others making an office based plastic surgery facility practical and the costs can be more contained. Of course, there are liposuction cases that involve more than one area of the body and may be extensive, requiring the preference or necessity for general anesthesia. Some plastic surgeons have facilities that are equipped to provide general anesthesia for liposuction as well.
The part that is delicate about liposuction at an office based surgical facility is that not all facilities are fully accredited which may pose additional risks for liposuction patients. It is prudent for women and men interested in liposuction to investigate the credentials of the plastic surgeon’s office based surgical facility prior to receiving the liposuction procedure. This is because alarm had been raised about non-accredited facilities being used for liposuction. States may have laws that require surgical facilities to obtain and maintain accreditation through a governing body acceptable to the state’s health commissioner. To take it a step further, the AAAASF was formed in more recent years to truly safeguard against unsafe practices at office based surgical facilities. The AAAASF provides third party inspection, peer review of select cases, reporting of medical complications such as unexpected hospital admission, infection, and allergic reaction to medication or anesthesia- in essence, a standardized format to obtain and maintain ongoing accreditation.
Since the laws regarding office based surgery vary among the states, it is important to select a plastic surgeon that has an office based surgical facility that is fully accredited by the AAAASF. Though, liposuction can be one of the simplest plastic surgery procedures, it is critical to seek out more information about the facility prior to the procedure. The facility can have a role in the outcome of plastic surgery, even when it is minimally invasive such as liposuction.
