Choosing Your Nose Surgeon: Complexity Update
A common term among people interested in nose surgery today is facial plastic surgeon and rightfully so. The term itself relates directly to the face when compared to the general term plastic surgeon. Plastic surgeons that focus on the face are likely to be keenly familiar with all of the features on the face and how each feature relates to the nose. This allows plastic surgeons that focus on the face to anticipate other feature changes that may occur from nose surgery. Yet, when considering a nose surgeon for rhinoplasty, there’s a lot more that goes into choosing a nose surgeon than meets the eye today.
Board Certification: Nose surgeons may be certified by American Board of Plastic Surgery, American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Board of Otolaryngology. Non-invasive nose surgeons who use injectibles to provide nose reshaping may be certified by any of the above mentioned boards as well as the American Board of Ophthalmology or the American Board of Dermatology.
Medical Organization Association: Nose surgeons usually participate in continuing education programs through medical organizations to keep abreast of the latest techniques in nose surgery. Such organizations include the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Post Graduate Work: Nose surgeons may complete one to five or more years in a general surgery residency program as well as one or more years in specialty training for bodily areas. Nose surgeons may also have completed internships and fellowships in specific areas of expertise.
Hospital Privileges: Nose surgeons obtain hospital privileges to perform the nose surgery procedure by having their skills evaluated by a team of peers at one or more hospitals. This group evaluates the surgeon’s quality in expertise, technique, and safety.
Seal of Approval: Nose surgeons may become members in good standing in hospitals medical societies, and through facility accrediting agencies.
With the wealth of options to choose from, selecting the right nose surgeon today may appear complex. Reviewing the list to identify the differences between nose surgeons allows you to ask credible questions during consultations with the nose surgeon that you are interested in seeing.
