Cellulite Treatment Options

Cellulite treatment is a desire of many women. Cellulite typically affects women more than men because of the genetic differences between men and women in connective tissue structure and perhaps, hormones. Cellulite consists of constricted fat because of vertical fibrous connective tissue bands called fibrous septae. Cellulite affects people of all sizes and ages over 18. There are conflicting reports as to the reason why cellulite occurs.

Suggested Causes of Cellulite

  • hormones
  • lack of exercise
  • toxin build up
  • inappropriate diet

Cellulite Improvement

There is not one golden grail procedure for the improvement of cellulite. There is a wealth of remedies, including, but not limited to:

Cellulite Creams and Pills

Creams and pills fall into the over-the-counter category. However, the safety and efficacy of creams and pills is not fully recognized. It has been claimed that creams containing collagen, vitamin C, vitamin E and aminophylline may be worthwhile. Certain creams may contain other ingredients that produce side effects and have not been tested for safety or long term use. Pills may not have been tested for safety and efficacy as well.

Endermologie and Vela Smooth

Endermologie is an FDA approved method for the temporary improvement of cellulite and skin texture. Endermologie has been in use since 1996. It is a non-invasive procedure that uses a vacuum device with rollers to lift soft tissue and perform a deep massage on connective tissue and fat cells. The procedure requires 30-45 minutes per session and up to 12 sessions are necessary to achieve a benefit. The results may be maintained through repeated sessions. Vela Smooth is another type of similar technology that was approved by the FDA in 2005.

Liposuction such as laser lipo may improve cellulite and skin texture, but the fundamental goal of liposuction to remove fat. Cellulite treatment is not a reason for traditional liposuction. Ultrasonic Liposuction is a non-surgical means to remove fat and may improve skin texture, skin elasticity and cellulite.

Fat Transfer

Fat Transfer may improve the appearance of cellulite by using fat injections to augment the bodily area that has cellulite.

Dermawave Cellulite Treatment

Dermawave treatment may involve one of two types of equipment to improve the appearance of cellulite. The new technology uses thermal laser energy in combination with the delivery of energy waves to improve cellulite. The technique may require up to twelve 30 minute sessions that may occur over a short period of time. Since the technology is fairly new, the long term results have not been quantified.

Evaluating The Options

There are many other options to choose from. Yet, people interested in cellulite treatment should discuss an appropriate solution with a medical professional. Plastic surgeons are equipped to answer questions about cellulite treatment or refer you to an appropriate specialist. The most important aspects in the evaluation for the right cellulite treatment include:

  • Extent of cellulite removal
  • Safety of the technique
  • Side effects that may be associated with the treatment
  • Extent of improved skin elasticity
  • Level of expertise of the professional performing treatment and the type of certification
  • Proof of clinical trials that have evaluated the safety and efficacy of cellulite products and procedures
