Afro-American Nose Surgery: The S Way

There was a 77% increase in the number of Afro-Americans havingnose surgery from 1999 to 2007, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). Perhaps, it was celebrities such as Beyonce, Kelli Rowland, and Patti La Belle that initially set the stage for the spurred growth in Afro-American nose surgery. The before and after nose surgery photos of these celebrities depict two fundamental changes. The first was softening of the bulbous nasal tip. The second change was for the narrowing of the nose bridge. Yet, the greatest beauty in the results of these celebrities nose surgery is that ethnic origin was preserved.

Afro-Americans may be likely to undergo nose surgery to reduce a bulbous nasal tip, narrow the nose bridge, and elevate a depressed bridge. With these characteristics, it’s not a surprise that a special S-Implant would be developed for Afro-American nose surgery patients.

In Afro-American nose surgery, plastic surgeons often must use an implant to fill the depressed area of the nose. This is because the frontal area of the nose in Afro-Americans usually has less cartilage when compared with Caucasians. Nasal implants fill this void. In recent years, a new nasal implant, known as a custom Silastic S- Implant, was developed to leverage nose surgery results for Afro-Americans. The S-Implant is designed to augment the depressed frontal area and the dorsum of the nose. In this way, the bridge of the nose may be heightened while at the same time preserving the fundamental ethnic features of the nose.

Women and men interested in Afro-American nose surgery may ask the plastic surgeon that they are interested in seeing about their experience with nose surgery on Afro-Americans. A select number of plastic surgeons focus on nose surgery for people of various ethnic origins. There are a variety of nasal implants on the market. Implants are available in a variety of sizes and shapes to allow a custom fit for patients as well. Plastic surgeons may have a preference for a specific implant material and brand. People interested in nose surgery may inquire about the number of times the plastic surgeon has performed the procedure, the type of implants that they use in the procedure and the technique that they use to help preserve ethnicity following nose surgery.
