Dr. Newman obtained his undergraduate degree from UCLA and then moved to the east coast for medical training, including medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and basic science research at the National Institutes of Health. He then spent six years at the Medical College of Virginia (Virginia Commonwealth University) completing a combined general surgery and plastic surgery residency. During his residency training, Dr. Newman gained extensive experience in the full spectrum of plastic surgery including cosmetic surgery of the face and body, surgery after massive weight loss, reconstruction of the head and body after traumatic injuries, reconstruction of the head and body after major cancer surgery, repair of facial and hand fractures, elective and traumatic hand surgery, craniofacial surgery including cleft lip and palate repair, burn surgery, and wound care.

Upon completion of his plastic surgery residency, Dr. Newman was selected to pursue additional fellowship training at Georgetown University Hospital under the guidance of Drs. Scott Spear and Maurice Nahabedian, known for their expertise in breast surgery including breast implants and DIEP flaps, respectively. These internationally recognized plastic surgeons authored the textbook that set the standard for all types of breast surgery. The fellowship at Georgetown also focused on cosmetic surgery of the face and body, including clinical instructor responsibilities such as teaching cosmetic surgery techniques to residents.

During his training, Dr. Newman was involved in numerous research endeavors leading to several publications, many dealing with the topics of breast cosmetics and breast reconstruction (see CV for details). He received various awards during his training including membership in several honor societies, teaching awards during residency, and an award for the highest score at his institution on the plastic surgery annual examination.

After completing plastic surgery training, Dr. Newman returned to the west coast to continue his plastic surgery career. He joined the Association of South Bay Plastic Surgeons in August of 2007, where he practices the full spectrum of plastic surgery including both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face and body.
