Juvederm Side Effects

Juvederm is a type of injectable gel that is used for restoring volume to the skin as well as for smoothing away folds and wrinkles in the skin. It is commonly used for areas of the skin that are highly visible, such as those around the nose and mouth as well as those on the forehead. There are actually two different types of Juvederm. There is Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus. Juvederm Ultra is primarily used for correcting wrinkles in the face that are moderately deep as well as for giving fullness to the lips. Juvederm Ultra Plus is much denser and is commonly used for improving the look of folds in the skin that are much deeper.

Juvederm is made from a sugar that is naturally occurring, known as hyaluronic acid. One of the most interesting things about this sugar is that it is capable of binding to water. When the acid becomes attracted to water it is then able to actually plump up the skin. As it does so, it begins to fill and smooth out the surface of wrinkles. Basically, it assists in replacing the fatty tissue in the skin that is lost through the aging process and as the skin is damaged by ultraviolet light.

As a cosmetic injectable treatment, Juvederm is now commonly being used by many people of all walks of life around the world to treat bothersome wrinkles and folds in the skin. While such treatments were once considered to be only used by celebrities, models and actors, even everyday people of all professions are now coming to use treatments such as Juvederm for a rejuvenated appearance and increased self-confidence.

As with any cosmetic treatment, it is important to understand the possible side effects that may appear. As a gel, Juvederm is typically well tolerated. Most side effects associated with this treatment are mild to moderate and do not last very long, usually less than seven days in duration. Some of the most common side effects associated with Juvederm include reactions at the injection site such as pain, tenderness, redness, swelling, firmness, bumps, lumps, itching, bruising and discoloration. There may also be a risk of infection, which is the case with all injection procedures in the skin.

Your physician will inform you of what you should expect following a Juvederm treatment with the injectable gel. Always make sure you ask your physician whether you may apply cosmetics following your Juvederm treatment. Keep in mind that it is a good idea to avoid strenuous exercise, consuming alcoholic beverages and prolonged exposure to heat or the sun for a minimum of 24 hours following your treatment. Exposure to these elements could result in temporary swelling, redness and/or itching at the site of the injection. If you do notice swelling, you may need to apply an ice pack over the affected area. Make certain you report any visible swelling and/or redness that last beyond a few days. You should also report any symptoms that are of concern to your physician. Most side effects usually subside within one week of the treatment. If symptoms persist and do not subside, contact your physician.

Make certain you inform your physician of any medications or drugs you have taken as they may have an impact on your treatment. It is also important to report any history you may have of severe allergies. This includes allergies you may have to gram-positive bacterial proteins as some dermal fillers such as Juvederm may contain small amounts of such proteins. If this is the case, Juvederm may not be a suitable treatment for you.
