One type of breast reconstruction involves the use of expander implants. These are temporary and placed within the chest wall and require a series of surgeries. They are partially filled with saline. For this procedure, the entire rectus abdominus muscle is used to transport the lower abdominal skin and fat up the chest wall. Breasts are then reconstructed using this tissue. The flap is transferred to the chest by tunneling the muscle under the upper abdominal skin. One benefit to this technique is that the patient will have a flatter abdomen. Since it is the patient\'s own tissue, the breasts will appear more natural. The scar that appears on the abdomen is low.
