Surviving and Thriving - From The Council for Breast Reconstruction

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's a time to call attention to a disease that strikes 211,300 women every year, and kills 39,800 of them... leaving children without mothers, husbands without wives, and women without best friends. It's the second leading cause of death among women 35-50. With early detection, mortality rates could drop dramatically.

In October, pink ribbons will be seen in most doctors' offices and on the lapels of millions of men and women. Corporate sponsors have provided tremendous exposure for this highly popular cause and have increased their support year after year. It's our job to keep the momentum going strong in promoting breast health.

The purpose of presenting these 3 Stories of Survival is to increase awareness of the disease, promote monthly self-exams, get yearly mammograms for early detection, and to ultimately save lives. We need the full cooperation of the media to achieve our goal. Each of these true stories is compelling, emotion-charged and tells a story of determination to live, and the strength to turn a tragedy into a life-altering positive experience.
