Blepharoplasty is surgery that is performed on the eyelids to correct droopiness by removing excess skin, fat and muscle. As you age, the muscles supporting the eyelids stretch and weaken which results in the buildup of excess fat on upper and lower lids. This can cause sagging brows, drooping upper lids and bags under the eyes. Severely drooping lids can also impair vision.

Having blepharoplasty in Houston is usually performed in an outpatient clinic. Before deciding if eyelid surgery is right for you, you must consider the benefits and risks associated with this procedure. One benefit of an eyelid lift is that it can make you appear younger by tightening the skin around the eyes. Another advantage is that it may improve your vision if you have extremely baggy lids.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved with blepharoplasty such as infection and a reaction to anesthesia. These risks are unlikely to occur as your plastic surgeon will know your medical background and will monitor your healing progress after surgery. Other risks can include temporary numbness of the eyelids and areas surrounding the eye, dry eyes, temporary changes in vision, abnormal eyelid function and scarring. Before eyelid surgery, your plastic surgeon will obtain a complete medical history for you. You will then undergo a complete physical examination. Your eyes will also be photographed from several different angles in order to help plan for eyelid surgery and to assess the immediate and long-term effects of the surgery. Your physician will also discuss with you your expectations of the eyelid surgery and what you hope to accomplish.

In order to prepare you for surgery, you will be asked to avoid taking aspirin and other drugs one week before surgery. You will also be asked to avoid sun exposure before surgery and two to three weeks thereafter. Your blepharoplasty surgeon will insert numbing medication into the eyelids and will give you a sedative intravenously to help you relax. If you are having surgery on both the upper and lower lids, your doctor will most likely work on the upper lid first. A tiny incision will be made at the natural crease of the upper lid. Excess fat, skin and muscle will be removed. The incision may be sutured with tiny stitches, and in some cases surgical tape or skin adhesives may be used. Then, the same is done to the lower lid.

The procedure usually takes less than two hours. You will spend some time in a recovery room and will be monitored for a few hours after surgery to ensure there are no complications. You will be required to use an ointment on the eyelids to protect them and to prevent dryness. Pain is minimal and healing time can be up to three weeks.
